Sarah began her hairdressing journey in 1999 in Moray, where she was born and raised. However, life took a different direction when she became pregnant with her first child, Molly. Following this, Sarah married and moved to Germany, where she had two sons, Scott and Lee.

During her time in Germany, Sarah worked in the Station Officers' Mess, focusing on providing silver service and organising functions for the British Army. Despite this, she never felt a strong passion for the role.

In 2014, Sarah returned to Moray, but the journey wasn’t as straightforward as she had hoped. After the breakdown of her marriage and having spent 10 years in Germany, Sarah and her three children settled in Kinloss. They had built a life in Germany, and returning to Moray meant they had no support network, except for her parents and family. This resulted in a period of deep depression. At that time, Sarah thought she would never be able to revisit her passion for hairdressing or train in the field.

However, during the pandemic in 2020, Sarah decided to make a change. Unsure where to start, she wondered if she could return to education as a mature student, whether courses were available to her, and how she would manage transitioning back to college. It was a daunting prospect, almost like starting school again.

After a turbulent 2020 and being there for the birth of her beautiful granddaughter in 2021, Sarah enrolled at UHI in 2022. Alongside her daughter and with considerable support from student services, they both began a Level 4 Introduction to Hairdressing course, progressing onto Level 5. Now, Sarah is currently midway through a Level 6 training course.

The confidence Sarah has gained throughout her journey led her to run for and be elected as UHI Moray’s HISA Depute President, where she now serves as a voice of change for students.
