Carpentry and Joinery (SCQF Level 6) Modern Apprenticeship

What is special about this course?

Modern Apprenticeships (MAs) offer anyone over the age of 16 the chance to earn while you learn. They are an exciting way of gaining a recognised qualification that will help to start your career without having to study full time. 

As an apprentice carpenter/joiner you could be involved in a range of projects from floor joists and window frames to hanging doors and fitting units and worktops. 

You will work with experienced colleagues on real projects while putting into practice what you learn from our dedicated lecturers at our Linkwood Technology Centre. 

This course will provide apprentice carpenters/joiners with specific Trade Training as specified by the Construction Skills Sector Skills Council (CITB), ensuring that you will be highly qualified and skilled.

Entry requirements

You should be in a job or placement where you are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow you to gather the required evidence to achieve the qualification.

  • Install Second Fixing Components
  • Erect Structural Carcassing Components
  • Produce Joinery Setting Out Details
  • Mark Out Joinery from Setting Out Details
  • Manufacture Joinery Products
  • CITB Health and Safety Test
  • Maintain Internal and External Timber Components
  • Contribute to Establishing the Operational Area
  • Contribute to the Progress of Operations
  • Assist with the Organisation of Resources
  • Co-ordinate and Install First and Second Fixing
  • Components and Finishings
  • Integrative Assessment in the Construction Industry
  • Co-ordinate and Erect Structural Carcassing Components

The key element of a Modern Apprenticeship programme is work-based SVQs combined with five core skills.

How will I study my course?

  • Part Time
  • Work based
  • Block release

This course is work based where you will train towards a nationally recognised qualification while working as an employee, with support from UHI Moray. You will attend classes on campus via block release with the remainder of the time spent training on the job.

How long will my course last?

4 Years

1st year: 19 weeks on campus learning 

2nd year: 11 weeks on campus learning 

3rd year: 1 week on campus learning 

4th year: 1 week on campus learning

In most cases course fees will be covered for 16 - 19 year olds provided they are in employment. Funding may also be available for ages 20 - 24 and 25+ in certain sectors.

What can I do on completion of my course?

On successful completion of this course you may: 

  • Gain full time employment within the industry 
  • Progress onto further study including the PDA in Carpentry and Joinery or HNC Construction Management
