Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (SCQF Level 7) Modern Apprenticeship
What is special about this course?
Modern Apprenticeships (MAs) offer anyone over the age of 16 the chance to earn while you learn. They are an exciting way of gaining a recognised qualification that will help to start your career without having to study full time.
This course is certified by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) and is recognised and valued by employers.
As an apprentice in the vehicle maintenance field, you could be involved in a range of projects from inspecting and repairing vehicles, undertaking diagnostics techniques, working with fuel and transmission systems, and more.
You will be encouraged and supported to undertake an Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) Assessment on completion of your apprenticeship.
You will work with experienced colleagues on real projects while putting into practice what you learn from our dedicated lecturers at our Linkwood Technology Centre.
Entry requirements
You should be in a job or placement where you are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow you to gather the required evidence to achieve the qualification.
Course content may include:
- Contribute to housekeeping in motor vehicle environments
- Reduce risks to health and safety in the motor vehicle environment
- Maintain working relationships in the motor vehicle environment
- Use of hand tools and equipment in motor vehicle engineering
- Diagnose and rectify light vehicle engine and component faults
- Diagnose and rectify light vehicle chassis system faults
- Diagnose and rectify motor vehicle electrical unit and component faults
- Facilitate individuals learning and development
- Identify and agree the motor vehicle customer needs
- Inspect light vehicles
- Overhaul light vehicle mechanical units
- Diagnose and rectify light vehicle transmission and driveline system faults
- Remove and fit basic motor, mechanical, electrical and trim (MET) components and non permanently fixed motor vehicle body panels
The key element of a Modern Apprenticeship programme is work-based SVQs combined with five core skills.
How will I study my course?
- Part Time
- Block release
This course is work based where you will train towards a nationally recognised qualification while working as an employee, with support from UHI Moray. You will attend classes on campus via block release with the remainder of the time spent training on the job.
How long will my course last?
Following the modern apprenticeship route: 3 years
1st year - 3rd year: 6 weeks per year on campus

Fees
In most cases course fees will be covered for 16 - 19 year olds provided they are in employment. Funding may also be available for ages 20 - 24 and 25+ in certain sectors.

Funding
Funding from Skills Development Scotland to contribute towards the cost of the apprentices training under the Modern Apprenticeship programme is available for all young people aged 16 – 19 for all frameworks. Funding may also be available for young people between the ages of 20 – 24 and 25+. This is dependent on the frameworks and sectors and can change annually.

What can I do on completion of my course?
On successful completion of this course you may:
- Gain full time employment within the industry.
- Progress onto further study at UHI Moray such as an engineering degree.
- Progress onto further study at another institution such as HNC in Automotive Diagnostics and Management Principles or Level 4 Diploma in Advanced Automotive Diagnostics Techniques.
