What is special about this course?
The Essential Massage Skills course is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills required for progression to further and higher academic qualifications in:
- Integrative Healthcare
- Complementary Therapies
- Soft Tissue Therapy
- Sport Therapy
This course is suitable if you have an interest in hands on therapies and/or integrative healthcare or if you are looking to enter the healthcare sector whether you:
- are a school leaver
- are returning to education
- are looking for a career change
- have an interest in hands on therapies
- have an interest in Integrative Healthcare

Entry requirements
- Three National 4s OR
- A SCQF Level 4 or 5 course or equivalent.
- Applications are encouraged from prospective students without the standard entry requirements as listed above.
Course content includes:
A variety of units will be studied, providing you with underpinning knowledge of many aspects of
- complementary therapies
- soft tissue therapy
- sports therapy
- nutrition and wellbeing
- academic and study skills
- clinical skills, resilience, and self-awareness
The core units of this course link with the BSc (Hons) Integrative Healthcare degree, the HNC Soft Tissue Therapy, and the HND Sports Therapy programmes, enabling a smooth transition if you wish to progress into a higher education course.
Equipment
You will be required to purchase a uniform for this course (Approx. £130). If you are eligible for a bursary these costs will be covered.
How will I study my course?
- Full Time
This is a blended learning course with face-to-face practical classes on campus supplemented with our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
While we operate a commercial clinic, you are encouraged to find your own clients where possible to meet the specific requirements of the portfolio.

Normally, if you are studying full time for the first time and are Ordinarily Resident in Scotland your course fees will be covered through the information you provide on your course application.
If you are studying part time and are on low income or in receipt of certain benefits your course fees may be covered by a fee waiver.
If you are not Ordinarily Resident in Scotland, you may need to pay course fees.

What can I do on completion of my course?
Successful completion of this course allows progression into the HNC Soft Tissue Therapy course or Year 1 of the BSc (Hons) Integrative Healthcare course.
