Hairdressing - Foundation SCQF Level 5
What is special about this course?
Designed to provide you with a firm foundation for building the skills and knowledge required to pursue a career in hairdressing, this course provides foundation training including basic cutting and colouring which are the key units required within the hairdressing industry.
This is a practical hands-on course providing you with the basic practical skills within a commercial salon to enter the industry at Junior Stylist level or progress to further study.
You must have an ability and willingness to communicate with people to be successful in the hairdressing industry.

Entry requirements
- Three National 4s (including English) OR
- Completion of Introduction to Foundation Hairdressing (SCQF Level 4) or Access to Hairdressing and Beauty Therapies (SCQF Level 4).
- You must attend a Course Information Event held prior to the course commencing.
Course content includes:
- Consultation in Hairdressing
- Shampoo & Conditioning Treatments
- Basic Colouring Techniques
- Basic Styling Techniques
- Wellbeing & Mindfulness
- Core Skills: Numeracy, Communication, and Information and Communication Technology
Equipment
You will be required to purchase equipment for this course. If you are eligible for a bursary these costs will be covered.
Equipment required includes:
- A uniform (approx. £119.14 to include tops, trousers, apron, and shoes)
- Hairdressing toolkit (approx. £389.87) included a cutting kit
Order forms will be sent out to you once you have confirmed and accepted your offer of a place on the course.
How will I study my course?
- Full Time
This is a practical based course with face-to-face practical classes on campus supplemented with our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
While we operate a commercial salon, you are encouraged to find your own clients where possible to meet the specific requirements of the portfolio.

Normally, if you are studying full time for the first time and are Ordinarily Resident in Scotland your course fees will be covered through the information you provide on your course application.
If you are studying part time and are on low income or in receipt of certain benefits your course fees may be covered by a fee waiver.
If you are not Ordinarily Resident in Scotland, you may need to pay course fees.

What can I do on completion of my course?
Upon completion of this course, you may progress onto:
- Barbering - Foundation Award: College Certificate (SCQF Level 5)
- Hairdressing - Current Techniques: College Certificate (SCQF Level 6).
Alternatively, you can enter employment within the hairdressing industry as a Junior Stylist.
