This course will provide you with the underpinning knowledge and skills required for the motor vehicle engineering industry.
You will learn essential skills including:
- light vehicle systems and routine maintenance
- operating principles of light vehicle engines
- tyres, brakes, steering and suspension systems
- transmission systems and electrical and electronic systems, including knowledge of carrying out low Voltage operations on, near, or with electric vehicles
Your learning will take place in a practical modern vehicle workshop, with theory lessons taking place in a classroom environment.
This is the ideal course to help you progress into employment, a Modern Apprenticeship, or further study.
Entry requirements
Three National 4s including English and Maths (National 4 Application of Maths is not accepted)
OR
A relevant SCQF Level 4 course.

- Knowledge in Carrying Out Non High Voltage Operations On, Near or With an Electric Vehicle (UR12 04)
- Knowledge of Routine Light Vehicle Maintenance (UR02 04)
- Knowledge of Light Vehicle Combustion Engine Mechanical, Lubrication and Cooling System Units and Components (UR04 04)
- Knowledge of Light Vehicle Fuel, Ignition, Air and Exhaust System Units and Components (UR05 04)
- Knowledge of Light Vehicle Electrical Units and Components (UR07 04)
- Knowledge of Light Vehicle Chassis Units and Components (UR09 04)

How will I study my course?
- Full Time
This is a practical based course delivered face-to-face on campus.
You will be required to submit coursework to the IMI e-portfolio system and undertake regular online tests as a mandatory element of gaining the IMI qualification.

Additional costs
You will be required to purchase boots, overalls, and PPE to undertake this course (approx. £70). If you are eligible for a bursary these costs will be covered. All workshop tools and facilities are provided.
You will also require basic stationery such as a pen, notebook, and folder for theory lessons (approx. £15).
What can I do on completion of my course?
On successful completion of this course you may progress onto:
- a Modern Apprenticeship with a dealership or independent vehicle maintenance and/or repair company
- a SCQF Level 6 Engineering course (alongside required Mathematics qualification)
