Environmental Science and Sustainability NQ SCQF Level 6

What is special about this course?

This hands-on course will develop your practical investigative and experimental skills across a range of topics in Horticulture and Science.

You will develop:  

  • a scientific understanding of environmental issues and will have the opportunity to investigate key areas of the living environment 
  • key employability skills in the conservation, sustainability, science, and land-based industries 
  • problem solving skills in an environmental context both through team working and independent working

  • You will study at our training facility at the Biblical Garden in Elgin overlooking the iconic Cathedral and in our science laboratories

Local employers will provide relevant industrial talks to aid in your understanding. 

There will also be field trips to plant nurseries and science labs.

Entry requirements

  • Four National 5’s at BBDD or above OR
  • A relevant SCQF Level 5 course or equivalent. 
  • Applications are encouraged from prospective students without the standard entry requirements as listed above.

  • Earth resources
  • Living environment
  • Living organisms
  • Soils and plant nutrition
  • Managing and maintaining an environmental area
  • Survey and report on the condition of the environment
  • Chemistry in Life
  • Sustainable food production

Equipment

You may wish to purchase relevant textbooks.  

  • Steel toe capped safety boots and gloves (Approx £40) 
  • Suitable clothing for outdoor work (Approx £30) 
  • A list of recommended texts and other useful, but not essential items will be provided in the course handbook. 

If you are eligible for a bursary these costs will be covered.

This is a practical based course delivered face-to-face on campus and at our Biblical Garden Campus with support from your lecturers. 

Guest speakers and industry visits may be used to enhance your learning experience.

What can I do on completion of my course?

On successful completion of this course you may wish to progress onto the HNC Applied Sciences at UHI Moray or the HNC (Next Gen) Horticulture or the Environmental Science degree within UHI.
