Our 2023 - 2024 Senior Phase Students
Charlie Goulay - Developing Leadership in Recreational Sports Activities
I really enjoyed the developing leadership course. I didn't really know what I wanted to do within in the sports industry, but when I took this I really enjoyed it. The lecturer, Stephen, was really good and helpful if you were stuck would encourage and support you. The course gives you a really good insight on how to be a good leader within the sports industry and even in general life. It was good that we got to go out within the community to do our work placement for the course.
We also learned about the different roles of a coach. It was also half and half of theory and practical which I enjoyed. This gave us a good insight and knowledge of what the HNC course would look like, which is what I have moved onto now. We also had to make our own session plans which was good cause it was testing what we had learnt and had to put into action.
Caleb Poucher - NPA Digital Media
I really enjoyed going to college on a Wednesday while I was still at school as it was a more suited way for me to learn. The transition to starting my Level 6 full time Computing and Digital Media course was great because I found out how supportive college is and how it's a lot less restricted than a regular school environment, so I found it very easy to switch over. I am enjoying my current course and my hopes for future academics are to do another year here and start the Digital Design and Web Development HNC next year
Dzenija Andersone - Higher ESOL
The lessons are really interesting. We do activities in groups and pairs rather than just sitting and trying to figure things out on our own. I find it more useful than just listening to somebody talking. We’re learning a lot of practical life skills that I have already used and will also use in the future such as different styles of writing (job applications, formal and informal emails). The grammar and vocabulary that we cover in class have also helped with my writing a lot.
Studying some of the new topics has been challenging but the teacher has given me techniques and really helpful worksheets to study at home.
When I started the course, I had my mind set on studying a degree in Forensic science to follow in my mum’s footsteps. For this I need to go to university and the Higher ESOL qualification will help me to get onto the course.
I would definitely recommend this ESOL course as it has helped me not only at school but also with my language skills outside of school.
Myles Wilson - Practical Engineering
I am interested in a career in engineering. I found it quite good as the course was easy to pick up. I gained extensive knowledge of how to build circuits in a breadboard, how to transfer those circuits over to stripboard and vice-versa. I also learned how to find out what is wrong with a circuit by testing different parts. I faced many challenges building circuits as they would often not work, however that gave me good experience in problem solving.
Sophie Thornton – FA Creative and Digital Media
The Foundation Apprenticeship in Creative and Digital Media course was an amazing opportunity for me. Throughout the course I worked both in a group environment and individually on many different projects such as: thinking up a company and designing its logo, designing a promotional video for the 30th anniversary of a company, and main project for my work experience saw me designing and creating a fully branded set of promotional assets for use across websites, print, merchandise and social media for an event called “Jamoween 4”. This is an annual Halloween themed game development event hosted by Indie Games Squad.
By doing the FA course I was also able to get into my current course, HNC Digital Design and Web Development, allowing me to further explore my interest in Digital Media and Design.
