Real-life, Useful Learning

Moray College UHI Core Skills students are exploring the many reasons why we should keep our town tidy. Whether for the benefit of local wildlife, reducing the annual clean-up costs or keeping our area tidy to encourage tourism and help our economy, there are plenty of reasons for putting rubbish where it belongs – in the bin.

Students are being invited to consider actual examples of volunteer rubbish grafters, find out about what's happening locally (Litter Action website) and review a recently-launched campaign designed to change attitudes towards litter (Clean Up Britain website).

Involvement in the Elgin BID’s community litter pick-up is being encouraged, and if people wish to join in on Saturday 29th or Sunday 30th September, contact Jacqui Taylor at Elgin BID on 01343 550652 or e-mail Jacqui@elginbid.co.uk. The public can also report heavily littered areas, by e-mailing Moray Council on waste@moray.gov.uk.

Stephen Duff, Moray College UHI lecturer supporting waste education at the college said, ‘I hope that people can spare a little time to help keep our green spaces and streets tidy.’

Stephen added, ‘During this semester, Computer Aided Design and Drawing students at Moray College’s Linkwood campus will be challenged to develop innovative plans for “on-the-go” recycling and waste bins. These bins aim to be low cost to fit tight budgets and streamlined to squeeze into narrow pavements.’

Whilst the process of designing the bins itself is educational, it is hoped that there may be an interested company that would build the “Community Bins” or would like to offer help, if you are interested in this project please e-mail Stephen.Duff@moray.uhi.ac.uk.
