Student Blog: Peter, HNC Applied Sciences

Studying our HNC in Applied Science can be a gateway to a variety of careers. We sat down with current student Peter to discuss how the course is supporting his aspirations of studying optometry.

Hi Peter, can you start by telling us what made you apply and why was this course right for you?

UHI Moray was my only choice because of its proximity to my home and serene environment. Studying HNC Applied Science was very helpful in securing admission to study Optometry at UHI. Hence, it is undoubtedly the right course I needed.

How do you feel this course has developed your knowledge, skills and overall experience?

My studies in HNC Applied Science not only equipped me with theoretical knowledge but also provided invaluable practical experience in the science industries, ecosystem development, and conservation. A standout moment was the industrial visit to the beer industry, where I had the opportunity to directly apply my theoretical knowledge of traditional biotechnology applications, such as fermentation, in real-world settings. This hands-on experience not only deepened my understanding but also instilled a sense of confidence in my abilities to apply theoretical concepts in practical scenarios. Furthermore, I gained practical skills in experiments relating to crucial aspects of chemistry and microbiology relevant to science industries. My Knowledge of Quality Health and Safety Standards and COSHH/risk assessment forms relating to Industries and practical science experiments was also greatly improved.

My journey in HNC Applied Science was instrumental in enhancing my understanding of the solutions to fundamental statistical and mathematical problems that are integral to various science disciplines. This comprehensive knowledge not only broadened my horizons but also honed my analytical and problem-solving skills, instilling in me a meticulous attention to detail. Additionally, I became proficient in using Microsoft packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), further augmenting my technical skills.

Were there any challenges?

Undoubtedly, the journey of studying HNC Applied Science presented its fair share of coursework and workload challenges. However, my commitment to my studies extended far beyond the classroom. I dedicated extra time, delved into additional research, and heightened my interest level. I also demonstrated my ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team. These resilient and determined efforts were pivotal in helping me navigate the challenges of examinations and report/essay submissions. As a result, I developed effective task prioritization skills, met deadlines consistently, and thrived in high-pressure situations while maintaining the required standards
