Student Thoughts: Craig, HND Computer Science
With a curriculum that includes cloud computing, network technology, and advanced software development our HND in Computing gives our students hands-on experience in designing and implementing applications, database management, website development, and cyber resilience. We caught up with 2nd year student Craig to learn more about his studies.
Hi Craig, can you start by sharing why you chose to study with us?
I chose UHI Moray as the college was recommended by friends who had previously attended.
Did you study with us previously?
Yes, I completed the HNC in Computing and transitioned to the HND. The progression was very smooth, everything was explained prior to the transition and all questions about year two were answered.
Now that you’re nearly completed year two, how has the course developed your knowledge?
I feel that my knowledge base has greatly improved since starting the course, I am now in a position where I can put my newly acquired skills to use outside of college and feel ready to take on the next challenge and progress my studies further.
There were some challenging new skills to learn and develop, but the lecturers and course materials explained everything very well so that with a little support, everything became clear and at no point did I feel that I was stuck or falling behind.
What are the plans for the future?
I knew I would like to have a career in IT but I wasn’t totally sure in which sector, I planned on undertaking the HND in Computer Science and learning more about the different careers available before deciding which appealed to me the most. I realise now that I enjoy software development the most out of all the subjects we have covered in the course, so a career in development is currently my new plan.
Lastly, what advice would you give to anyone considering studying this course?
I would say take the opportunity. The course, the lecturers, the resources, they are all really helpful and informative and I would say you are guaranteed to develop your knowledge and skills on the chosen subject. There is plenty support, and you are never left behind, help is always just a question away. As a ‘mature’ student I was slightly nervous about coming back to education, but the nerves were gone after day 1. The pace of the course and the support available made it very easy to return to being a student.
