The Moray Digital Health Initiative Lecture

Moray College UHI are proud to be hosting a lecture by Professor Grant Cumming , Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Dr Gray’s Hospital on Wednesday 29th January from 7pm. Professor Cumming will talk about the Moray Digital Health Initiative – the unfolding narrative within the bigger picture.. and how this is an area of rapid growth for Moray and the Highlands. The lecture marks the renewal of Professor Cumming's Honorary Professorship of the University of the Highlands and Islands.

The lecture takes place in the conference room of the Alexander Graham Bell centre at Moray College UHI. The newly constructed centre will, itself be a catalyst in the future growth of digital and health and life sciences for the North or Scotland and beyond and will be a unique environment in which academia, research, business and health can come together under one roof.

The centre was completed in November 2013 and offers a range of facilities for organisations involved in the digital health field, researchers , students and health practitioners to share knowledge, network and create new and innovative products to bring to the market.

Professor Cumming’s lecture will discuss how recent changes in society and technology together with a global health care crisis has shifted the emphasis of healthcare delivery from a biomedical model (fighting germs) to a bio-psychosocial model (chronic diseases and behaviour), with Information Communication Technology (ICT) and health communities increasingly utilizing the Internet to deliver healthcare solutions.

Medicine is increasingly being mediated through: preventative, participatory, personalized and predictive modes, (P4 health), with the recognition that this approach requires medicine to shift to a patient-centric, proactive model of healthcare delivery. P4 digital healthcare is part of e-Health. It is multidisciplinary and utilizes technologies from the fields of ICT, medical equipment and pharmaceutical devices together with patient participation.

Many e-Health interventions have not fulfilled their promise, however, because the processes utilized in the design and evaluations are out-dated.  Digital healthcare fits within the P4 digital healthcare remit providing a more convenient platform to collect, curate, visualize, interpret, manage health and disseminate information. Digital health therefore has become increasingly important in the future of medicine.

The unfolding narrative within the bigger picture will discuss how the Moray Digital Health Initiative (MDHI) has uniquely positioned itself as a testbed to meet the needs of delivering 21st century health care. The talk will therefore discuss why The MDHI is here- what is the unique selling point of the Moray Way,  why Alexander Graham Bell is important- the problems needing solutions and the influence of the MDHI locally and globally.

The Moray Life Sciences Centre will greatly assist us in taking forward our research in the area of Life Sciences and in particular Digital Health.  Prof. Cumming has been at the forefront of much of this work and this lecture will celebrate the renewal of his Honorary Professorship of the University of the Highlands and Islands.  His lecture will both highlight the work undertaken over the last year and our collective plans for the future.    Although we look forward to a more formal opening later in the year we are delighted to host this lecture in our new Centre’
