UHI Moray Survival Guide
So, you’ve said yes to the course (congratulations!) but are now wondering how to get the best out of your time with us? Don’t worry, here’s our survival guide.
Make sure you’re enrolled
Saying yes to the course isn’t enough, you must enrol too. Why? Enrolling ensures that you get access to our systems and confirms to us your commitment to study.
How do you enrol? Simply go to UHI Records and pop in your email and password. This should have been sent to you via email. Be sure to check your junk folder just in case.
Attend your induction
Class inductions are vital to your success as a student as they provide you with all the information you need including:
- Class timetables
- Staff introductions
- How to access and use our IT systems
- Campus tours
When is my induction? You should receive an induction letter advising you of your start date and time but you can also view these online on our Before you start: information for offer holders and new students page.
Know when and where your classes are
It’s important to show up for classes on time. It is how you’ll get the most out of your time with your lecturers. It also shows that you respect your classmates as lateness can interrupt their learning.
Going to be absent? Fill in our Absence reporting form. This form must be completed and submitted on the first day of absence (unless you have a Doctors Certificate).
It’s also a good idea to show up at the right location. No one wants that awkward moment of realising you’re in the wrong class. We understand that navigating our campuses can be a daunting task, but you will be given a campus tour as part of your induction. Don’t want to wait? You can take a virtual tour of our campuses right now.
Get to know BrightSpace
BrightSpace is the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) used by UHI. It is an online system that helps lecturers provide support for teaching and learning. You don’t need to be in a classroom or even on campus to access and use the system - all you need is access to the internet!
You can access BrightSpace by clicking on the link in the student portal (MyDay). If you are using a UHI computer MyDay will be set as the default home page when you access the internet.
Not on campus? you can either go to myday.uhi.ac.uk or download the MyDay App. Just use your normal student/UHI login to access all the online services.
Make use of PAT/LDW time
As a UHI Moray student, you will either be assigned a Learning Development Worker (LDW) or Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) depending on the SCQF level of your course.
LDWs/PATs ensure that you have all the help and support you need to be successful in your studies. They will be your first point of contact should you need any support, and if they can't help directly, they will ensure you have access to the right specialist support service within UHI, so use your time with them wisely.
Engage with The Study Bar
Your personal success is important to us and The Study Bar is here to ensure that you make the most of your potential by offering a range of learning support services, including:

Be study ready
This may go without saying but the best tip is to be study ready. Make sure you have a notebook (physical or digital) for taking notes or sketchbooks for drawing classes before you start your course. In some cases, you’ll be expected to have a kit to use as part of your studies which will be given to you during induction.
You’ll also be using various technologies during your course which can be daunting at first, but we aim to give you a better understanding of what these are and how you can use them. You can view information about our services on our UHI Service Catalogue pages at any point.
The following products are also available for free to eligible students:
- Autodesk
- National Instruments (Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - STEM Students)
- Microsoft Imagine - (STEM Students)
