Join the Independence Referendum debate

Moray College UHI are hosting a public debate on the Independence Referendum on Wednesday 22nd January between 6pm – 7pm at the Alexander Graham Bell Centre Conference Room at Moray College UHI.

Debating for the Yes campaign is Sandy Adam, Chair of the Yes Moray Campaign and chair of Springfield Properties. Sandy, is the grandson of the founder of Springfield which was established in 1956. A lifetime supporter of independence Sandy is not a member of any political party. He has always believed that Scotland is a nation and every nation has the duty and responsibility to look after its own affairs and that the Scottish Government should have the same powers as every other Government. Sandy was one of the first people to financially support the Yes campaign and in Sept last year Blair Jenkins, chief executive of Yes Scotland asked him to set up and chair a strategy group in Moray. Sandy is a board member of Business for Scotland  a group of over 1000 business people throughout Scotland that support and are campaigning for independence.

Debating for the ‘Better Together’ campaign is Labour Councillor Sean Morton. Sean is one of the younger councillors in Moray Council and represents the ward of Fochabers- Lhanbryde. Sean has been an equalities campaigner for over a decade and believes that the fight to help everyone reach their own potential is one that the people of the UK should fight together, without borders between Scots and the rest. He believes that the countries of the UK can prosper better together than they ever could alone. As well as carrying out his council duties Sean sits on a number of external boards including Women’s Aid.

Delegates will have the opportunity to listen to the cases for and against a Yes vote prior to a ‘question time’ style debate. This is an opportunity to get your questions answered about the forthcoming referendum and what it will mean for the future of Scotland.

This will be only the second debate on the independence referendum to be held in Moray since the date was announced. The event has been organised by Social Science students as part of their learning. There is another debate planned for later in April.

There is no requirement to book and light refreshments will be served. Doors will be open from 5.30pm.
